Maybe Elvis and the birth of rock ’n’ roll were all the rage elsewhere in 1957, but here in BC our brewers were excited about perfecting a simple, iconic beer. Forget about gimmicks. This was lager as it was meant to be — something you can curl up with (Lager in German actual mean bed or camp). Today, half a century later, we are carrying on that tradition — brewing an honest beer and an honest light beer from that same classic recipe.

Meh, Didn't get much on the nose and although the taste was slightly malt forward it was very weak in flavour. That being said this is one of the beers I use in tastings when I show how to "Randall" a beer for that very reason. Normally I'd avoid this one.

355ml can, a single from a random Liquor Depot store's remainder bin.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, very pale golden colour, with two fingers of loosely foamy white head, which leaves a low ebbing of lace around the glass as it quickly recedes.

It smells of stewed corn mash, sweet alcohol esters, and the medicine cabinet when you first open it. The taste is semi sweet corn, sort of bready, (but not cornbread, weirdly), some very tame dead vegetation hops, and a hovering echo of sugary alcohol.

The bubbles are pretty well inert, the body medium-light in weight, and actually fairly smooth. It finishes off-dry, the bready, corny (still separate!) malt stepping up, and the weedy, cooked veggie essence standing down.

Huh. At first whiff, this screams out drain pour. However, once that nasty aroma blows off, a generally innocuous cheap beer emerges. Nothing crazy here, now, but something indeed worthy of the price, if not the headache I presume accompanies full-pack indulgence of this here offering.

Bought at random while looking for a lager at a liquor store in northern BC (farther north than Prince George where this was brewed). It comes in a six-pack of cans which comes to only $1.37 per can. It pours with a foamy white head which reduces quickly and leaves little lacing. The body is clear and yellow. There is a light aroma, mostly of grain and maybe corn. The taste, like the aroma, is light. I get a rootbeer and noble hops flavour.

It has little carbonation and a light body. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised. Little to no alcohol taste. While I was bracing for something bad, it was actually fairly good, especially for an american adjunct lager. It is a little light for me but is one of the better adjunct lagers I've had.

Obtained a few of these free while volunteering at the BC beer awards. Free beer is always good, right?

A: Really pale colour, clear with a head that lingers very shortly.

S: Smells like corn and not too much else. I faint note of alcohol. Not enjoyable.

T: Tastes like corn with a bit of skunk to it. Not that appetizing.

M: Does what its supposed to. Light, clean and crisp. Good level of carbonation.

D: As far as I'm concerned, a lager should be extremely drinkable and this will probably be the second time I dump over half of it. The flavour doesn't entice me to keep drinking.

Picked up a few of these from the State Liquor Store in Vernal, UT. Hoped for a "Traditional" in the sense of being barley only. Not so much. $.75/Can

A: A little darker than the average adjunct lager. Stark white head about half an inch thick that disappears just as fast as it arrives, no lacing. Excellent clarity.

S: Soap, cooked corn, booze as well. Not really a whole lot going on here, doesn't smell rancid, but just does not smell like something intended to be smelled.

T: Tastes like chewing on an aluminum can, cornflakes, cooked corn, and a slight hint of skunky hops. Taste of metal is entirely too strong on this one. If that wasn't there, it would taste like a pretty standard adjunct lager.

M: Light, crisp carbonation, dry, hits all the notes for any lager.

D: No way. This is definitely a drain pour, I honestly don't think this can was lined, it tastes as if someone dropped a few tabs of aluminum in my beer.

Live and learn on a beer like this.
