Day 14 of the 2018 advent calendar.
A very nice offering; mostly sweet with a smooth finish. It lacked a lot of roasted malt notes, but otherwise it was a perfectly serviceable stout in my books.

330ml bottle - day 14 of the 2018 Craft Beer Advent Calendar, a collaboration with fellow German brewers Hoppebräu.
This beer pours a clear (I believe), very dark amber-highlighted brown colour, with four fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and mildly fizzy beige head, which leaves some random streaky lace around the glass as it rather lazily subsides.
It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, cafe-au-lait, a hint of anise spiciness, and very tame earthy, musty, and floral green hops. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, medium chocolate wafers, day-old coffee grounds, some free-range ashiness, licorice root, and more well-understated earthy, herbal, and dead floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its palate-supporting frothiness, the body a so-so middleweight, and mostly smooth, with just a touch of char maybe getting in the way of an ideal time here. It finishes trending dry, the malt losing some steam in the face of the lingering roastiness.
Overall - this comes across as a simply-rendered version of the style, with just enough flavour to make it worth drinking. I'm not certain that I would want more than one, but am glad to have tried another new craft brewing concern from the other side of the world.
