Contention City was once predicted to see the sort of enormous boom that Tombstone experienced, but it never happened. Now just a few scattered foundations near the banks of the San Pedro River, it is a monument to great ideas that never took hold as they should have. In this crazy modern beer world of booming pastry stouts, milkshake IPAs, and soda sours, we hope the noble barleywine does not go the way of poor old Contention City. Elegant and complex with a bready, biscuity, and intensely malty base supporting rich notes of dark fruit, toast, and toffee, this velvety sipping beer is a classic example of a style that deserves to boom too.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber with a one finger cap; shards of lacing
Smell: Toffee and licorice with an earthy bitter aspect
Taste: A hint of toffee and licorice that is quickly subsumed by an earthy bitterness that leans in a minty, medicinal and herbal direction
Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation; surprisingly thin
Overall: I love a well-brewed example of this style but this one is not pushing my buttons

Picked up a single from the Kings Beer & Wine cooler on 9-5-18 for $4.99. I believe this was packaged in mid-August. Cold stored since purchase.
Beer poured a reddish brown with a pretty good head that dissipated quickly with the exception of a small ring.
Nose has primarily dark fruits, dates and prunes come to mind.
Taste is really well balanced between the large malt base and the hopping. It is a tad on the sweet side, true to the English style, but not cloyingly so.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and has a nice soft silky texture.
Overall an enjoyable beer that i am glad i got to try!
