First we started with our classic export stout made with a blend of American and British roasted malts. Giving you that classic roasty, coffee, and dark chocolate flavors. Then we added in lots of cocoa nibs, coconut, lactose, and vanilla beans to recreate those flavors of German chocolate cake. One sip will make you think it's your birthday.

On tap at Gravity Taphouse Grille in Grand Rapids Michigan.

This newly tapped brew arrived in a small snifter. The near black and near opaque body looks a bit oily and has ruby-brown edges when held to the light.

The aroma suggests an attractive chocolate pastry. This sweet "chocolate cake" stout is, of course, sweet. Nonetheless, the sweetness is not cloying but instead fits nicely with the stout's overall flavor profile.

Love this pastry stout. Has a nice dark flavor to it with the perfect amount of sweetness. Not too overbearing at all. Nice and smooth

Aroma is dry dark/slightly earthy malts and chocolate. The flavor is dark/roasted malts, coconut, chocolate, mild fruit/dark fruit and a slightly burnt/smoky/acidic finish.

Unknown vintage (presumably 2019); drank 7/4/19 @ the Yarchives.

Black appearance.

An even pour yielded a HUGE dark tan head (careful pouring!); frothy lace.

Coconut & milk chocolate notes in the nose.

Sticky medium thick mouthfeel.

Coconut, metallic abrasiveness & stale hops; an abomination.

Avoid at all costs.

6.5% ABV. Acquired a four-pack of pint cans at Binnys in Glen Ellyn. This review is of the second can because I was watching a movie when I had the first, and not paying attention. Pours a somewhat muddy brown/black, thin head that stays around the edges. Smell is the flavor of the beer as advertised, remarkable in its accuracy. Mouthfeel is a little thin for what I assume is a milk stout at heart. The flavor has the sweet/sour bite of grade-school chocolate milk, with the coconut trying to even things out. The stout is nowhere to be found.

I roll my eyes at purists who contend that pastry stouts are gimmicky, because I have drunk one or two that are amazing syntheses of beer and sweet stuff (by Energy City and Off Colour, for example). But with GCCS I sympathize with the detractors. Delivering on the beer aspect should be a priority.
