Pivovarna Union (Laško) “Goldstern 8.3˚ Doppio Malto”
Brewed for Gruppo PAM S.p.A., Via delle Industrie 8, Spinea (VE) by Union.
500ml can
€,77 @ PAM PanoramaS.p.A., Pisa, IT
Notes: Another cheap supermarket/train station/TV beer. I believe I’ve also seen this in other countries but I might just be remembering it from Roma. It’s a clear golden beneath a white head. Average head retention and lacing. The aroma is a kind of generic adjunct beer with sweetish malt, some apple-like fruitiness from the yeast, and a smear of herbal and perhaps spicy hops (the spiciness may actually be from alcohol). It’s probably hop extract, not that I have a problem with using hop extract, just that it seems like that. The flavor follows in the same way with more grainy malt, but also some alcohol. The alcohol helps the stiff bitterness to balance it but it still finishes with a bit of sugary malt (not too sweet, and certainly not cloying) that fortunately fades rather quickly. It’s medium bodied with a dextrinous edge, and moderately crisp. It’s probably not the worst beer that I’ve had along these lines, but it’s certainly not the best.
