I've wanted to make a beer with loquats for a long time. They grow all over Los Angeles and although they're not native to California, they still somehow feel representative of the area to me. Layton, the brewer at Angel City Brewery introduced me to a loquat farmer they've sourced some fruit from and I knew it was time to make it happen. Loquats lend a very subtle flavor to the beer with bits of tropical mango and white flower notes. After aging the beer on them for several months, we took the delicate beer and added oolong tea to infuse for a few hours. The result is Revealed Truth, a beer that's floral and delicate and tart, with oolong in the foreground and loquats providing a delicate complexity.
I hope you enjoy this beer and for those of you who haven't indulged before, I hope it inspires you to pick some loquats from the myriad trees scattered throughout the yards and sidewalks of Los Angeles this Summer!

16 oz can into a tulip
It’s sad that I just had to add this beer over a year after it was canned…says more about the state beer culture, or lack thereof, than the brew itself.
Nevertheless, been sitting on a few of these for a bit now, and it’s too bad only a few have had the chance to partake. It’s not an earth-shattering concoction, but chefy af - the brewer Alex contracted with a local loquat farmer (Big Jim Loquats) and let the fruit infuse into beer aged in oak barrels, finished with some oolong tea. It’s tart and citrusy and earthy and perfectly quaffable.
Here’s to appreciating hidden and forgotten gems.
