What a pleasant surprise. This is a fantastic ale, done in a style not often seen in the States, but fully worthy of more serious attention.
Just a wonderful way to appreciate a huge helping of malty goodness: rich caramel malt, toffee pudding, toasted nuts, a bit of fig and clove, but also a pleasant, bitter, char-like coffee note that balances quite wonderfully overall. Hops are present as a slightly bitter, earthy note, but the maltiness carries the day.
Puts me to mind of a halfway point between an English Mild and a Barleywine. An exciting beer to try, and a great opportunity to indulge in a style rarely seen this side of the pond: vastly interesting and worthy of pondering, yet eminently approachable and totally quaffable. Bravo.
