Teeming with maltiness and balanced with tantalizing spice, the strong, malty and peppery ale that has become synonymous with the Christmas season pays a visit to Rock House Brewing.
Deep and dark mahogany, the ale would be easily mistaken for stout if seen in the wrong light. Its creamy short froth frames a scent of allspice, cinnamon, clove and ginger that's soft with yankee candle scents and a boozy backdrop. To the tongue, the malts are juicy with molasses, honey, biscuit and bog.
As the flavors develop, the sweetness begins to relax and the spices roll onto the middle palate. Peated whisky, woods, walnut, toast, coffee and cocoa all add peps of maltiness before the all-star spiciness of apple pie spices, mulled wine and a peppery sarsaparilla flavor overcomes the finish.
Woodsy, peppery and with a stern rum and whisky spice, the full and luscious beer trends malty sweet but tempered with drying booze, toasted edges and warming spice, the ale achieves a drinkability that evades cloying sensations or palate fatigue prematurely. Its a sipper by the fire and a great facilitator for cosmos solving with friends.
