As the summer comes to a close, the palate looks toward hefty, richer, strong ale. But there's still some warm days sprinkled about the late summer calendar and Rock House has just the beer for that.
End of Summer Crusher pours with a pale burnt orange color and topped with a dainty swirl of foam. Mild citrus, cereal and spice grace the nose a standard pale ale scent. Light sweetness of grain wash the early palate with light caramel, honey and granola.
As the ale crosses the middle palate, its sweetness drifts and the hops begin to tighten the taste into a mild grapefruit and orange peel impression. The light vegetation of cereal persists while an introduction of spice trends slightly medicinally and vinyl-like. Moderately bitter, the beer trails with light grasses and spruce.
Medium light on the palate, the beer carries a session pale ale character that's certainly crushable, drying and refreshing. But its synthetic peppery character from yeast spices keeps it from the clean palate that's most preferred. A quick aftertaste of pepper, citrus peel and grassiness has the next sip coming quick.
