On tap @ Craft
A: Good clarity, amber, low/medium carb, no head
S: Dank, honeydew melon, guava, huge pine, big aroma
T: Big resiny pine, almost oily in texture, coarse, sticky
O: A very nice and hugely hoppy DIPA, nice work
Growler fill @ Oak & Vine
A: Deep amber, slightly hazy, lowish carb (3.75)
S: Caramel, pine, a bit skunky, some thick tropical fruit lurking in the background (3.5)
T: Resiny and seriously bitter, biscuity/toffee vibes (3.5)
F: Medium bodied, smooth mouthfeel (4.0)
Not bad, I feel like this has suffered from some packaging/distribution issues despite being consumed very close to where it was brewed
O: 3.5

1L howler from Sherbrooke Liquor store in Edmonton - this is the big brother to the 'First Ditch Effort' pale ale from a few weeks ago. I love how the employee there wrote 'Outkast' on the attached tag - so, for you, Patrick, I'm firing up some 'Hey Ya'.
This beer pours a slightly hazy, medium copper amber colour, with a hefty fistful of puffy, rocky, and chunky ecru head, which leaves some fractured cliff-side lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.
It smells of gritty and grainy caramel malt, some biscuity toffee, prominent blood orange and red grapefruit citrus rind, a hint of unresolved yeastiness, and some heady leafy, weedy, and certainly piney green hop bitters. The taste is bready and somewhat doughy caramel/toffee malt, muddled domestic citrus notes, a thankfully resolved yeast situation, and more testy earthy, herbal, and still nice and resinous piney hoppiness.
The carbonation is quite light on its mildly fizzy and otherwise frothy feet, the body a decent middleweight, and mostly smooth, just a bit of citrus, pine, and ephemeral yeasty notes putting their own stamp on things here. It finishes off-dry, the base malt keepin' up airs, while all those various kiddo hops gad about like the adorable toddlers that they are.
Overall, this appears to be another very recommendable 'first ditch effort' (DIPA version) from this nascent Cowtown brewing operation. Maybe not the strongest example of the style, but good and flavourful, with a nice biting hop offset (always a plus to my palate). Keep it up, Outcast (with a 'c'), and Kickstarter will soon be part of your rearview mirror (sorry, Pearl Jam is now up on the playlist).
