A 473ml can, with a canned on date of 6th June 2018, ‘what’s up Europe’. Poured into a Lost Abbey teku glass.

Appearance: A very hazy dark orange colour with a two finger white head that had pretty good retention and left some sticky lacing.

Aroma: Orange juice and orange peel with hints of creamy mango smoothie and pine.

Taste: Light to moderate bitterness, orange juice, orange peel, grapefruit rind, lightly herbal with a hint of mango and mango smoothie at the end.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall: It was ok. An easy drinking DIPA with great aromas. A bit more bitter than expected for an NEIPA, but not a big problem there.

A- This pours a beautiful golden yellow color that is about as cloudy as it comes.....like a thick smoke has permeated the liquid! The head is thick, plentiful and super white, starting out around two fingers thick before settling down to a thick patchwork over the beer itself....the carbonation is too hard to tell and the lacing is quite nice....steady streams of foam are clinging to the inside of my glass in subtle layers.

S- There's quite a medley of aromas happening here, ranging from citrus fruits (orange, grapefruit, pomello), to tropical fruits (pineapple, mango, passion fruit), to bready malt with a peachy quality, and finishing off with plenty of piney, floral and largely bittering fresh hop cones....quite intense and well rounded for the style!

T- Well one thing is for sure....the intensely bitter hop presence is noted from start to finish....in fact, it becomes somewhat beyond bittering on the finish, but rather mineral like dryness showing itself and hitting the back of the throat with gusto! After getting through all of the hoppiness, there are plenty of other notes that follow the aromas closely.....first I get a heavy dose of yeasty biscuit/bread like crystal & caramel malt blend, cream, balancing citrus rinds (grapefruit primarily), some tropical and orchard fruits (pineapple, guava and peach/nectarine come to mind), with a dry Earthy leafy finish due to plenty of alpha acids running over my tongue. After the initial shock of the boldness, it becomes quite rounded on the palate!

M/O- Medium/full body, with a good charge of carbonation throughout, albeit, it is smooth and wee tight bubbles. This allows the full flavor profile to really coat the palate and show off the various stages of malt to bitter roundness. I can see this pairing very well with a spicy dish or rich Asian cuisine, as the acids of the hops would cut through spice and oily flavors superbly. I do find it drinkable but will be fine after getting done this one can.....would I buy it again?.....perhaps not, but I wouldn't shy away from it either....just not my go to style but well done in my opinion!

 

Mmmmmmm. Just when I think Outcast has topped out, they come up with something even better. Murky, tropical, resiny and a whole bunch of hoppy goodness. Wow. An IPA for the faint of heart and the complex palate alike.

 

Appearance - Pours a murky apricot with four fingers of foamy white head.

Smell - citrus, tropical, and piney hops, bready malts, citrus, pineapple, orange peel, guava, grapefruit peel, and earthy yeast.

Taste - Citrus, tropical, and piney hops followed by the bready malts. The citrus, pineapple, orange and grapefruit peel, and guava come through next. The earthy yeast finishes off the brew.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes a tad sticky with the hops lingering.

Overall - An enjoyable and easy drinking IPA. The ABV is well hidden in this one. Another winner from the folks at Outcast.

 

 

473ml can - a 'double dry hopped New England Double IPA'. Doubling down, I see!

This beer pours a murky, rather turbid ripe banana yellow colour, with three fingers of puffy, rocky, and mildly bubbly off-white head, which leaves some stellar webbed and sudsy lace around the glass as it lazily but eventually blows off.

It smells of bready and doughy cereal malt, some pungent blood orange, red grapefruit, and aged lemon citrus rind, a prominent hard water chalkiness, and more leafy, weedy, and resinous piney green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy pale malt, a sort of acrid domestic citrus character, some damp minerality, and more piney, weedy, and gently perfumed floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is average in its palate-prodding frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, and mostly smooth, with a wee airy creaminess trying vainly to get off of the ground in the face of the swirling hops here. It finishes off-dry, the big frooty essences showing no signs of slowing down.

Overall - yup, what we have here, ladies and germs, is a very, very fine example of this sub (sub?)-style of IPA, all nice and citrusy and piney, with a well-integrated 7.8 points of the ol' wowee sauce backing it all up. It looks like orange juice with extra pulp, but all the cool kids are digging it, and it doesn't bother this old coot in the least. Great stuff!
