Helles Munchener Lager is the golden everyday drinking beer in Munich. Less hop flavor & bitterness than Pilsner the main highlight of Helles is its bready, malty character. Chuckanut created a smoky style Helles to capture the unique smoky flavors of the Rauch lager with the gentle easy going nature of the Helles. Deep malty flavor spiked with mild smoky overtones make this an unusual and satisfying beer!

Creamy and thin white head. Medium, clear gold look. Nice, subtle beech wood smoke on an off-dry, medium light toast malt foundation, for both the aroma and taste.

An aggressive pour reveals a crystal clear golden colored beer with a foamy white head. Gorgeous beer. The nose features tendrils of smoke accompanied by a nice bready malt aroma and a hint of grass.
The smoke is more developed on the taste, but doesn’t overwhelm the beer, allowing the bread and grass flavors to shine as well.
A crisp mouthfeel works well with this deftly executed Rauch Helles. What a magnificent brewery Chuckanut is.

Pours a crystal clear golden color. Thick frothy, velvety white head forms on the beer. The head slowly recedes until just a thin film of foam remains on the beer.
Aroma has notes of smoked malts, some light bread and hay, a bit of burned wood. Really nice balance on the smoke.
Taste follows the nose with notes of smoked malts, campfire and grainy malts. Its lacking the breadiness the regular helles had. The smoked malts are nicely balanced within the beer not dominating or overtaking it.
Feel is light, crisp, easy drinking. Moderate carbonation. Sort of drier on the finish.
Overall a very nice smoked helles.

On tap at P-nut.
A clear light yellow with a dense white head with good retention and lacing this looks great. The nose is softly smoky and delicately sweet, with a clear Munich malt sweetness, delicate, creamy and sweet. Light honey notes. The palate opens lightly bitter and delicately smoky, with a light, smoldering leaf like flavor. Mild malt sweetness, clean, bready, pure with a touch of honey. Expertly conditioned, this is creamy, lightly bitter and a little mineral. Drying, lightly smoky on the finish. Excellent.

Served in Willi Becher pint. Poured a clean, clear light gold color with an inch of bright white head that had very good retention and light lacing.
The aroma had the expected smoke at the front, but not so much that it covered up the pleasant base grains, or the light, floral hops.
The smoke was stronger on the tongue, but the grain and hops countered nicely. Very well balanced.
The body was smooth, crisp, light, and had a dry finish.
Drinkability was very good, you could easily put back a couple of these without getting burned out by the smoke.
Overall, a very nice brew, certainly worth a shot if you see it.
