A rich, dark ale made to last! Roasted malts add character reminiscent of chocolate and coffee. Caramel sweetness balances the dry bitterness from the roasted malts and hops. Truly delicious!
Cask and bottle conditioned ales are products of natural fermentation and natural carbonation. Nuanced flavor notes are best enjoyed between 52° and 57°. Some sediment is to be expected.

This offering was from a bottle of Cask Ale. The beer is black as coal with absolutely no highlights. The thin dark chestnut head is creamy, leaving a fine coating that turns to spotty lace on a Harp nonic glass.
The aroma is deeply roasted malt. Baker's chocolate is unmistakable, as is the black coffee, all in equal proportions. There is a light charred malt aroma as well as rich molasses and a hint of licorice.
Roasted malts play nicely with light bitterness that builds late in each sip. Coffee and molasses are accented by subtle sweetness. Pumpernickel bread also comes to mind, followed by a long finish that carries the sweet and charred malts.
Steamship has a medium to full body with a soft woolen texture. Carbonation is modest and fine against slight alcohol.
My experience with Cask Ales has been underwhelming until now. This is a fantastic beer and I am excited to try other styles from Seneca Lake Brewing Company, which seems to exclusively brew Cask Ales. This bottle went well on a quiet, cold, wet, early Autumn evening. On a side note, the brewery feels like an immersive experience in a beautiful location.
