Poured into a Harp nonic glass, Big Ben Porter is clear, dark brown with auburn highlights (SRM 19-22). A long-lasting khaki foam leaves spotty lace while it recedes from one inch to a thin blanket.
Malt aromas are strong, with deep, sweet, roasted dark chocolate. Pumpernickel bread fills out the middle, while faint smokiness is released as it warms.
Malt flavors occupy front and center. A light char accentuates baker's chocolate. This is far less sweet than had been suggested by the aroma. Light nuts are revealed with warmth. The finish is mild and lingering, with light smokiness.
A medium to light body and watery texture. Alcohol is more present than expected, yet still light. Soft carbonation brushes the tongue.
This could easily be considered an everyday beer. One could session it with buddies at the pub. I am imagining a dark wood-lined pub with a fire crackling and long conversation.
