Whoever said that you can't have your pie and drink it too had certainly never had Hoosier Brewing Company's Pie Face Series beer. Modeled after cherry cobbler and ice cream, their fruited kettle sour ale will transport the tastebuds to grandma's house for Sunday dinner and dessert.
Cherry Cobbler a' La Mode pours patiently with a hefty density and a cream laced cherry mauve appearance. Seeming dark pink while floating a pale pink froth, the striking scent of cherry and cream decorate the nose. With hints of cider and wine, a backdrop of acidity tingles the nose well ahead of a first succulent, tantalizing and savory sip of tart cherries, sweet cherry glaze, simple syrup and vanilla cream. Dense with pastry dough, poundcake and wafers, the dessert-like taste is in full swing.
With the sweet cherry, ice cream and shortcake character swirling on the middle palate, the underlying tartness of the ale seeps in with hints of white wine, dry cider, lemon and lime for a balancing agent of acidity that offsets much of the sweetness. This sweet and sour interplay extends into a late taste of candied fruit and macerated fruit with a side of French vanilla ice cream.
Blended into a smoothie sour form, the flavors are strikingly similar to the perscribed cherry cobbler and ice cream that's sensationally delicious for a few sips but palate fatigue comes on rather quickly and renders the beer a cloyingly sweet experiment in sour beer flavor.
