Gathered #1 is our new occasional series that seeks to capture a day in the life of the NEK by featuring foraged materials all harvested on the same day in our area—in this case 8.5.18. My hope is that this beer conveys the sense of place, season and elements there in. The materials selected for this premier release are Coltsfoot, Bramble leaf (raspberry/blackberry), Goldenrod and Chanterelle mushroom. Fermented with mixed culture and aged in oak

Hazy burnt orange with a frothy off-white head that fizzles out to a thin but persistent film.
This is a beautifully lightly tart beer with a faint earthy funkiness. It's lightly effervescent medium-light body exhibits citrus characteristics, like orange, grapefruit and lime, as grass, wheat bread dough and earth temper that before a semi-dry finish. A very mild oak and mineral funk come out with some apple and plum as it warms.

Appearance is a slightly turbid pale straw color. A vigorous pour yielded about a half finger of bubbly bright white head.
Aroma is pleasant funk, strong lemon lime citrus, and some oak. I also am getting some apple/pear, and some earthy notes.
Taste is big tart lemon/lime upfront. It then develops into oak, earthy funk and a very rustic finish. There are hints of apple and pear to me. The mushrooms come across as woody/earthy.
Feel is lively and crisp. Carb is moderate to high and the finish is slightly dry. Definitely refreshing.
Overall an excellent beer. There’s a lot of ingredients here and they all work very well together. The execution here is near perfect. This beer is definitely very interesting and very well done.

Moderate to vigorous pour yields a 3/4 inch white head over a slightly hazy, golden straw colored body with no lacing. Nose of part earthy, part musty, and part funky citrus with a tiny bit of licorice on the side. Taste of lemon, lime, bramble leaves (I guess!?!), and herbs. Mouthfeel is quite unique in that there is carbonation with a little extra added feel from the chanterelles, I guess. Overall, yet another one of a kind offering from Vasili that will confound some, intrigue others, and satisfy me. Cheers to the first in the Gathered Series!
