First Leap is a heavily oated and wheated New Zealand-inspired Imperial India Pale Ale hopped with Zeus and Taiheke then copiously dry hopped with New Zealand Green Bullet, Taiheke, Motueka, Lupulin Mosaic, and Zeus.
The result is a full bodied 8.5% ABV North East style Imperial IPA with overwhelming amounts of lime and dark fruit yet with an extremely different flavor palate.

Hazy, deep orange pour. Not much head--one finger at best. The nose really projects from the can and glass--fruity, peach and sweet blood orange. Mouthfeel is soft and fluffy; clearly oat malts are in the mix. Interesting swirl of flavors dip in and out during the tasting. There's an overall sweet tropical fruit profile, but lemongrass, floral hints and a citrus rind bitter finish that gives this IPA a welcome complexity. Tasty stuff!

Had this from a can.
A: pours a hazy golden body with a white head with excellent retention and lacing.
S: subtle, sweet citrus hop notes with hints of sweet lemongrass notes
T: sweet, alcohol up front with relatively subtle floral hop notes; banana eater notes with a dry, floral finish; interesting taste
M: full bodied and very smooth.
O: solid overall beer; nice mouthfeel and taste combo; this is a subdued bit solid imperial.

I bought this because I'm a sucker for Nelson Sauvin. Unfortunately to me this is an overly sweet mish mash of a beer. The smell is pretty solid - over ripe orange, burnt pineapple, banana. The taste though is too sweet with that very unpleasant aftertaste that all these nonsense hazy IPAs have. Any possible nuance from the Nelson is lost in a sloppy hop assault. nb

A: hazy burnt orange caramel color that looks thick. 1/2 finger off-white head that fades quickly

S: mango, apricot, and huge strawberry upfront. Wheat, oat, tangerine, melon and orange pith follows. A touch of sweet grapefruit and pineapple to close with some wet dough

T: mango, strawberry, and light pineapple juice. Big note of oats and some grassy hops as well. There is a nice floral note as well as a touch of sweet white grape. Oats and sweet pineapple juice to close

M: thick, almost chewy medium mouthfeel with low carbonation

O: flavors in here are nice, but a touch muted. Harmonized well, but nothings popping.
