Poured from 375mL corked & caged bottle into a tulip. This is the version of Radical Forces aged in a cognac barrel. The label says "Guardians of Funk" ... I'm excited! Bottled 1/29/19 ... 3+ years ago! Purchased just a couple weeks ago at the brewery.
Appearance: the beer is a rich amber-orange hue with a moderate haze and a thin finger of frothy foam on top without much retention. Not too bad.
Smell: I could start to smell raisins as soon as this bad boy was popped open; that's a good start! Up close, there's also a fair bit of sweetness along with a little funk and tartness. It's subtle, but the cognac barrel is coming through as well.
Taste: sweet, raisiny, and with an almost vegetal funkiness. Bizarre, but I kind of like it. Bitter in an interesting way, like an amaro or something. While this beer doesn't 100% work for me, it's definitely interesting, I'll give it that.
Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a moderate carbonation and creaminess.
Overall: this thing is a little bit boozy, but it gets points for originality. After 4000+ beers, you start to really value novelty. Worth a try if you see it, but maybe split the bottle.
