Appearance:
Black-brown and opaque. Huge tan, rocky head with large under-bubbles due to over-carbonation. Gobs of erratic lacing.
Aroma:
Notes of roasted barley and coffee.
Flavor:
Roasted barley. Sweet, dark malts. A bit of bitter chocolate. Clean but strong hop bitterness.
Mouthfeel:
Thick-bodied, carbonation is high but settles down to an acceptable roar. A good bit of alcohol tingle. Warming.
Overall:
The flavor profile is one-dimensional. not a lot of subtlety here. What is exceeds at is giving you the best taste of what roasted grains do for a beer. The subtler vanilla and dried fruit notes you typically find in this style were never evident to me. A great winter warmer. But points deducted for lack of complexity.
