Brewed specially for the CT Invitational Belgian Beer Fest, November 2003.
The beer is served a hazy burnished gold, with a thin collar of ivory head. The head keeps through the entire sample, but barely builds with some agitation.
Aroma is quite authentic, with rich caramel malt, similar to molten caramel, and plenty of sweetness. Lots of candi sugar, with huge estery fruit. Apple and banana stand out, with a thinner-like feel through the nose. Some spiciness, probably from the yeast, with a bit of pepper, and some phenolic clove and a bit of that medical band-aid smell. Not unpleasant like it sounds. The alcohol is definitely there, but well hidden beneath the malty sweetness.
Flavor starts with a huge caramel and candi sugar sweetness. Estery banana and apple moves in quickly, with some solvent-like estery alcohol wafting up into the sinuses as you let it sit on the tongue. The caramel continues all the way through, with fruitiness traveling into the finish, mingling with some yeasty spiciness. Peppery and clove-like, it balances the malty sweetness well. Some alcohol provides some bite in the swallow, finishing the beer admirably. A candi sugar sweetness lingers on the tongue well after the beer is consumed. Smooth, and a bit syrupy on the tongue, full bodied, with moderate effervescence.
For a brewpub that doesn't do any belgian styles, this is a hell of an attempt. Dave Wollner really outdid himself. Pleasantly pronounced flavors, with complexity and balance. I'm very impressed, and this was one of my favorites at the festival.
