Made specially for the CT Invitational Belgian Beer Fest, 11/03.
The beer pours a deep, woody brown, topped with a thin collar of beige mist. Hazy and unfiltered.
The aroma is surprising and interesting. Apparently this is Willimantic's Postage Porter recipe, kicked up a bit and "belgianized". A woody, yeasty chocolate malt is present, with a moderate candi sugar presence. An odd mixture of sugary sweetness and bittersweet baker's chocolate. Some dark estery fruit, with plenty of fig, raisin, and date. A bit of clove spiciness, with a light band-aid phenolic odor. A touch of cereal graininess from the chocolate malt.
The flavor starts with a slightly grainy chocolate malt, slightly bittersweet, but mingling with the candi sugar very well. The interplay is really interesting and tasty. Soft dark fruit pops in, adding a bit of raisin and date flavor. The finish is really fantastic, with a porter-like bittersweet coffee maltiness, mingling with some yeasty, peppery spice and very light alcohol. Medium bodied, with a sweet, yet robust overall feel. Moderate, spritzy carbonation.
A very interesting take on belgian style beer. I don't think I've ever heard of a belgian style porter before. The interplay of the belgian sweetness, coupled with the robust bittersweetness of an english style porter is just fantastic. I would love for Willibrew to make this again.
