Enjoyed on tap at Willi Brew last night.

The pour is a deep and dark translucent burnt umber, sporting a thin whitish head. Despite the limited foam on top, repeated sips left reasonable patterns of thin, but sticky lacing along the sides.

Smell was a medium mixture of roasted malt, baker's chocolate and bread.

Once tasted, all those flavors collide with sweet malted glory, revealing flavors of slightly roasted toffee, caramel and brown sugar, giving way to a full punch of cocoa. The treat, here, is the surprise ending of tart, almost "plum-fruity" hops, thanks to the presence of Cluster. As the glass warms, I pick up hints of vanilla and the warmth of esters. This ale packs a number of well balanced and complimenting flavors into one brief sip.

Mouthfeel is subtle and low in carbonation, but a good thing for this style. The syrupy texture works nicely with the palate of immersive, sweet flavors.

Overall this is an outstanding dark dessert ale, that rates with the best Belgian Dubbels and Oatmeal Stouts I've had. It is my understanding that Willbrew doesn't produce this often. If sweet and dark are in your palate, make sure to try this brew when they have it on tap.

I had this on cask 3/14/10 served in a 10 oz 1/2 pint.

A - A dark brown the color of coffee with translucent appearance and small cap of beige

S - The smell is sweet and roasted w/ aromas of cocoa and dark bread

M- The feel has rich roasted texture w/ smooth nuttiness and creamy feel as it finishes -nice cask treatment

T - A slight toast/biscuit flavor w/ a mildly sweetened cocoa flavor and creamy vanilla edge w/ mild hint of coffee and caramel- finishes semi-dry w/ dark toastiness

D - A delicious and drinkable Old ale, very easy to quaff for its 7.7%- the malt is smooth and the yeast compliments w/ a malt forward profile overall -well done Willimantic!

Brewed according to a colonial recipe

Dark chestnut colored with a firm tight head of bubbly foam. Low aroma of cocoa and marshmallow. Rings of oily lace rise up the glass. Flavors of darkly roasted malt, marshmallow, licorice, cocoa, and root beer. Some sharp bitter espresso balances out the malt. Molasses is a key ingredient and imparts a dark rich flavor. Full and even mouthfeel. Very drinkable and delicious beer, could have dozens of these.

I sampled this beer on a recent visit to fill some growlers and have lunch. The beer arrives in a 12 oz glass and is pitch black. There is a tan 1cm creamy head that recedes slowly to a sturdy surface layer leaving tight lattice. The aroma is chocolate and dark fruit plums and red grape with a bit of subdued booziness. The first sip is silky smooth and fairly thick with very fine carbonation. Flavor is robust and malty with chocolate and dark fruit, molasses and roasted malt too. The fruit is a mix plums raisins and rolls to a bit of booze and some roasty notes. The beer is very drinkable and quite tasty. Wouldnt want to drink a growler of it in a sitting though.

Thin, off white head that lingers for a moment and fades to the glass' sides. Dark plum in color with some deeper shades of onyx.

Light, dark chocolate aromatics with a touch of toffee. Raisin, plum, and other semi-sweet dark fruit.

Sweet fruity esters: plum, cherry, fig. Light cocoa, toffee, and cafe tones. Swirls of sharp, almost vinegar-like alcohol presence creating a sharp, and almost sour finish. An afteraste of warming alcohol, vinous fruit, and a touch of sweetness.

Full bodied; creamy and ripe-tasting on the palate.

A nice balance of vinous fruits and creamy chocolate tones. A good version of a unique style.
