On tap at the brewpub on 10/12/08.

Pours a dense black with some brown highlights around the bottom and a thin head of light tan foam. Retains around the edges with some thin wisps in the center that leaves a smattering of lace behind. The aroma is burnt smelling roasted chocolate malts that gives off a bit of an acrid tingle and is balanced out by some additional underlying caramel sweetness.

The taste is very similar to the aroma with deep, dark, tasting roasted chocolate malt character that gives way to some balancing caramel sweetness toward the back. Finishes with a nice ligering roasted bitternsss that hangs on the palette. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a firm carbonation that spreads out well. The dark roasted nature of this actually seems to add a bit more beef that nearly 6% ABV would have you believe.

Really solid stuff and quite unique with the dark roasted character of a Stout or Porter but retained a yeasty slickness to it that kept it very drinkable. If they had allowed growler sales on Sundays in CT, some of this would have followed me home.

On tap 10/3/08, followed by a quickly disappearing growler.

Maybe my new favorite from willibrew, and perfect for the sudden jump into fall.

A - pours black, very black, with a delicious looking dark tan head that remained for a good minute or so before slowly dissipating. The appearance is very reminiscent of a porter or stout, not so much a dark ale (closest I could think of for a description when adding this beer)

S - mmmm there is an upfront whif of dark unsweetened chocolate that gives way to toasted dark malts, and in the end a slight sweet aroma.

T - Thankfully, not entirely chocolate! The chocolate doesn't really kick in until the finish, instead upfront there are those toasty malts again, a nice bitter touch of hops but nothing obscene, just a little hint of sweet fruit from the belgian yeast used.

M - smoooth and lush with a slight bite at the end, but not one that really would distract from the rest of the beer when coupled with the chocolate malts.

D - extremely smooth I think and very easy to enjoy again and again. This is what I would expect if 1554 and Allagash Black had a child on the side, a little less chocolate than the stout and more body than the black ale.
