Reviewed on 12/22/2009. Growler from the brewpub. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of lots of bitter chocolate, some roasted malt. Flavor of roasted, charred malt and light bitter chocolate. Solid schwartzbier with a predominant chocolate profile, very tasty and super drinkable.

From the site: "An unfiltered chocolately German style Schwartz bier brewed with Spalt hops Pilsner and Munich malts."
One of my new favorites from Willibrew, I believe this is the first run for this recipe. A healthy skim milk & coffee head tops this black hued beer, leaving a thin ring around the glass. The nose is chocolate, semi sweet to bitter baker's chocolate, but not over the top. I also pick up that crispness from the pilsner malts added to this one.
The pilsner malts really add this nice clean, crisp malt flavor to the brew, while the chocolate malts add a dry roasted chocolate note that works really well. The body is perfect for this beer, the chocolate malts adding again a bit more body without really overpowering the pilsner. So yeah....goes down reaaaal easy. No hint of the booze either. And I burped chocolate!

Screw-top growler filled at the brewpub.
First imperial pint pours with a 1/2" dark brown head, over the opaque dark brown/black brew. Head recedes slowly, with sticky lasting lace. Aroma is roasty dark malts. Taste follows the nose, rich dark sweetness throughout, with a lightly crisp hop close. Mouthfeel is smooth, and drinkability is good as well. Tasty...
