A blend of Rail Mail Rye and Winterfest with the addition of spices. Served on cask at you-know-where.
A: The ale is a dark amber red color that verges on brown. Much darker than the Rail Mail, the Winterfest component is immediately noticeable. A small head comes with the ale.
S: This is where you get hooked. The aroma is neither rye nor winterfest; instead, anise and dark spices waft out. I'd swear that pepperminty aromas, albeit weaks ones, are lingering around. The anise and cinnamon are by far the strongest aspects. Very interesting.
T: Again with the anise. The flavor is intensely licorice, leading to a minty finish. Both the Rail Malt and Winterfest are shoved to the backseat behind that spice profile. Alongside the anise, mint and cinnamon are present. The latter seems especially concentrated, lending a red hot candy finish that burns a bit. Anise comes back as a lingering flavor, as do darker rye spices. A nicely spiced ale that, due to the cask, benefits from lower carbonation.
M: The mouthfeel, restrained by the carbonation, is spicy. Intense at times, the anise and red hot aspects kept me coming back for more.
D: A good beer but the kind that you need to limit. The spice profile could be a little strong at times, especially by your second or third helping.
