strongly flavored milks stout here, listed at just 5.8% abv when we had it, some batch variance over the years looks like, robust though on the roast side, fuller bodied, some bitterness from the dark grain set against the sweeter lactose, which creams this up a lot but does not make it all that sweet. tons of nuance in the nose and flavor of this shiny near black beauty, from unlit cigar and wet tobacco to milk and dark chocolate swirling together, brownie batter and fudge richness but not diabetic, black pepper and smoke, almost a rye malt note in the mix to me, oats seem likely as well, some fattiness to the texture too, like this is heavy for its abv, sits big in the belly, stays on the palate awhile, smooth and round feeling, creamy and rich and lathery, deeply earthy, and fairly bitter at the end too from all the roast. more coffee as it warms, good espresso and its crema, a hint of vanilla to me too. more than just sweetness from the milk sugar, it has a sort of milky taste too. i think very well made beer here, the heavier side of the spectrum but the execution is there. maybe a little much for high summer, but the quality is undeniable. we had a real nice time visiting this place, fun beer list and clever food too, recommended.
