I don't see a date code listed on the label or the can. It seems to be hit or miss with Benchtop.
Appearance: It is a black-bodied beer with a dense, khaki, medium-sized head. It has excellent head retention. There is some lacing on the glass which appears as thin strings that form decent rings on the glass.
Aroma: It has a chocolate aroma which smells a bit like a Tootsie Roll. There is a light aroma of vanilla that also comes through. A very light maple syrup scent follows, but it mostly comes across as vanilla. It plays tricks with the nose because it bounces between a normal vanilla aroma and maple syrup, then back to vanilla. It smells a bit artificial.
Taste: Up front there is Tootsie Roll chocolate. The middle of the palate has a bit of a burnt character mixed with vanilla. It tastes almost like burnt marshmallows near the center of the palate. The back of the palate has a sweet vanilla flavor which lingers and transforms into maple syrup character in the aftertaste. A touch of a charred note in the aftertaste. Some charred wood and pine flavors develop on the palate after a while. The beer tastes a bit artificial and as the beer warms up that becomes even stronger.
Mouthfeel: The beer feels full bodied. The label on the can states that this is "9.0% ABV" and it does a decent job of hiding it. It has a charred bitterness and a bit of a hop bitterness which seem to dominate the sweetness of the beer.
Overall: The label on the can states that this is "brewed with Waffles and Maple Syrup" and also mentions that this is "Brewed in collaboration with our friends at Mea Culpa Café here in Norfolk, VA." The waffles seem to be more of a gimmick than anything else because the beer doesn't really taste like waffles. It does have maple syrup aroma and flavor but it mostly comes across as vanilla. At times the vanilla tastes a bit artificial and there is this chocolate flavor which also tastes artificial. The beer says nothing about being made with chocolate or artificial flavors, but that's just how it comes across. I probably wouldn't buy it again but it was good enough that I will enjoy the rest of the four-pack. It isn't a beer I would recommend strongly but it could scratch the itch if you're looking for a bit of maple syrup flavor.
