You know, I haven’t had something like this since the old Rogue barleywines back in the day. It’s balanced but everything is jacked to 9 out of 10. Just cracking this bad boy open was an experience on the nose, it’s loaded.
After spending some time with it I feel like it tilts a little toward the malt but, boy, is it good. This is like old school big beer. Glad I’ve got a 4-pack, very nice beer.

There is a date code on the label near the bar code but it is extremely difficult to read because it is black ink on a black label. It states: "03/08/23"
Appearance: The body of the beer is a deep bronze color with hints of burnt umber, reddish-orange, and firey gold. It is dark but it looks like it has good clarity. The medium-sized head is a tobacco stained off-white color with a creamy texture. It has very good head retention and it leaves nice smooth sheets of lacing on the glass.
Aroma: An aroma of cocoa hits the nose at first with this earthy and old wood scent. It smells a lot like an old bookshelf full of dust. Some alcohol comes through on the nose.
Taste: Up front it has this cocoa nib flavor which isn't quite like chocolate but more of an earthy cocoa character. Towards the middle of the mouth there is a bit of tea character and a good deal of alcohol. A bit of sweet tea towards the back of the mouth and a lingering alcohol flavor in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: The body sits just between light and medium-bodied with just a light touch of texture. The can states that this is "6.7% ABV" and the alcohol shows a lot more than it should for the ABV. There is some hop bitterness.
Overall: As a whole the beer is pretty lackluster. The label on the can states that this is a "HOPPY RED ALE" and there is some hop character but the hops and malt characters don't meld well here. The somewhat odd flavor and aroma profiles combined with the obvious alcohol presence also hampers drinkability. It isn't a beer I am likely to pick up and although I wouldn't steer somebody away from trying this beer, it wouldn't be one I would recommend.
