There does not appear to be a date code on this can. Date codes seem to be hit or miss from Benchtop Brewing Co. The label on the can does say "KEEP COLD AND DRINK FRESH." It was purchased while stored in a refrigerator but I have no idea how fresh this is.
Appearance: The body of the beer is a golden-amber color with pretty good clarity; it has a light bit of haze and there is some opalescence refracting whatever can be seen through the glass. It has a large, fluffy, slightly off-white head which has good retention. It leaves patches of lacing on the glass.
Aroma: There is a light noble hop aroma to the beer. A very light hint of spruce tip. There is also a very faint cereal grain aroma. As a whole the aroma doesn't come through very well and it is only barely noticeable. What does come through is fairly pleasant though.
Taste: Up front there is a slightly sweet grain flavor with just a bit of caramel sweetness. The middle of the palate is somewhat herbal with a stronger grain presence. Some bay leaf towards the back with a touch of apple. Cedar on the back of the palate. Alcohol in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: It is medium-bodied and smooth. Carbonation feels good. There is a medium to medium-high hop bitterness depending on the sip. It is fairly drinkable but the presence of alcohol flavor hampers it just a bit.
Overall: The label on the can says that this is titled "MAIBOCK" and that the style is "GERMAN STYLE LAGER BIER" with "6.4% ABV." It lists the ingredients as "PILSNER MALT MUNICH MALT VIENNA MALT HERSBRUCKER HOPS." As a whole it floats in the average range for a Maibock. The flavors are a bit muddy with a sweeter more caramel malt flavor that battles, rather than blends, with the herbal hop flavors. I probably wouldn't recommend it off-the-cuff but I wouldn't tell a friend not to buy it either. I probably wouldn't buy it again, especially considering that Benchtop makes much better lager alternatives.
