There is a date code stamped next to the bar code on the can: "03/29/23"
Appearance: The body is a dull beige-orange color and it is completely opaque. It has a medium-sized fluffy white head which has excellent retention and leaves nice sheets of lacing on the glass.
Aroma: As soon as the can is cracked open there is this sweetgrass smell. Getting closer to the glass reveals a very strong aroma of garlic, onion, and rye bread. It also has a noticeable hop bine oil scent that is present on the outside of the whole hop plant and is very fresh smelling.
Taste: Up front there is some pineapple skin. This quickly shifts to a garlic and onion flavor towards the middle of the mouth with a rustic, crusty bread flavor. A light bit of alcohol comes through at times but it's only just barely there. Some orange pith and orange pulp flavor towards the back of the mouth.
Mouthfeel: There is a little bit of raspy hop burn to the beer. Hop bitterness is low which is appropriate but it feels a bit on the high side for what is normally found in the style, which is also fine. The beer has a light body which feels a bit too light for the style but it is still drinkable and enjoyable.
Overall: The beer drinks very differently from other Benchtop New England Style IPA's. They have been doing a lot of collaborations and the change in character might explain that, but there is no indication on the can that this is a collaboration. It drinks very closely to some more nationally recognized New England IPA's. I like the change in style but I personally hope that they don't change some of their other beers. The ingredients listed on the can say this is made with:
"BARLEY MALT
PILSNER MALT
WHEAT MALT
FLAKED WHEAT
CARAMALT
RIWAKA HOPS
CITRA LUPOMAX HOPS"
As a whole I enjoyed it and I would buy it again. I would recommend it. Some people pick up savory flavors like garlic and onion where others might pick up tropical flavors like mango, so it's important to note that this is one of those beers.
