Benchtop Brewing Co. seems to be dating their IPA's but not their most recent lagers or stouts. This one has a black stamp on a black label but it can be made out when held to a light: "04/05/23"

Appearance: The body is completely opaque and it has a pale milky yellow-beige color. The head is very large, cream-white colored, and it has a strong texture that appears both creamy and with a consistency of soap suds. It has excellent head retention where the head shows no immediate signs of receding. When it eventually does drop a bit there are large continents of lacing on the glass.

Aroma: It has a wildflower aroma with a bit of cabbage. Some hay grass comes through as well. There is a light bit of orange zest. Mostly is smells of wildflowers. Some alcohol on the nose.

Taste: Up front there is some pine, a bit of grapefruit, and some pineapple skin. It hits those flavors right at the front of the tongue which dissipate more towards the middle of the mouth. The center has a bit more grapefruit pith flavor and this old ice flavor which is hard to describe; ice that has been sitting in the freezer for too long. It is very grassy towards the back of the palate but there is also a bit of spruce frond flavor and a hint of lime back there which is refreshing. The flavors seem to get better with the beer if it is consumed without any palate cleanser as the more favorable ones layer and become stronger.

Mouthfeel: The beer has a medium hop bitterness which is stronger than the standard New England Style DIPA. It has a body that rests towards the lower end of medium and it has a touch of hop burn and acidity.

Overall: The can states that this is a "DOUBLE INDIA PALE ALE" and from all indications it is clearly a New England Style DIPA as opposed to a standard DIPA. It has some nice pine and spruce flavors which poke through with a bit of lime sneaking onto the palate as well. The beer has a bit of roughness with some of the hop burn, acidity, and alcohol presence. The aroma is mostly floral which isn't bad but it doesn't seem to really pair well with the more woodsy flavors of the beer. I would say it's worth a try but buy a single can or pour first. I could probably buy it again as a single pour but I don't think I would buy another 4-pack. The ingredients listed on the can state that this is made with:

"BARLEY MALT
WHEAT MALT
VIENNA MALT
FLAKED OATS
FLAKED WHEAT
CITRA HOPS
MOSAIC HOPS"
