Sampling a cellar temp 12 oz stubby bottle poured into my snifter. The beer is part of a swap with @resistance88 thank you!!
The beer pours a deep mahogany color, holding my glass to the light I get some rich garnet tints on the edge. A fizzy beige head of < .5cm foams up and fades to a thin edge layer soon after the pour into my glass. A scattered few small islands also float around the center of the glass.
The aroma on this beer is big, robust and malt driven. There is a lot of toffee and caramel with some raisins and plum mixing in and a good dose of bourbon. I also get a little boozy alcohol from the nose and this warns me to sip this beer. No hop character on the aroma that I pick up.
The first sip reveals a medium body with smooth silky mouthfeel. A little sticky texture that coats my palate and lips each sip I take. The beer drinks fairly easy on the physical traits, which is a little surprising.
The flavor is all malt forward, I again dont get any hop characters here. This barleywine seems more of the English ilk based on flavor profile. I get a lot of toffee and brown sugar mixing with some raisins and a bit of darker chocolate too. The bourbon of course shows here as well, but I dont get any fusol warming booze to accompany the bourbon. The flavors are very rich and filling and I enjoy the malt driven profile. This is a great barleywine and I would encourage folks trying this one if you can get em.

That’s some pretty GD delicious liquid there. I really think it’s more in the English style, but that is 100% fine by me. Call it tomato soup for all I care. Pours a decadent dark burnt caramel color with a bubbly head that sticks around a very brief moment. The nose is burnt caramel, vanilla, smokey peaty vibe. First sips…yeah. Fire. No aggressive hop bite like I would expect from an as-labeled American barleywine. It’s all toffee, caramel, toasty, Werther’s buttery-ness with a metric ton of barrel spirit heat. I’m in the house tonight due to all the rain, but this would be perfect outside considering the instant warming. 12.5% is bold, but approachable for the seasoned imbiber.
