Urban Village Brewing Co. "Rye Bread India Pale Ale"
one pint can, "CANNED ON 12/24/19 13:44"
$3.99 @ Shop Rite Wine & Spirits, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: It's poured a cloudy light brown body beneath a finger's width or more of off-white foam. There's visible particulate in suspension, which looks like yeast to me. Tiny bubbles can be seen rising steadily towards the surface. The aroma is citrusy with orange and grapefruit, spicy, floral, grainy, and earthy. It's a fairly bright aroma. The flavor is surprisingly similar - I was expecting more malt but the hops remain, and in fact have more complexity to them. There's a pleasant fruitiness to it that I'm feeling is coming from the hops, and it's woody, gently herbal, and softly piney as well. I'm assuming that the spiciness is coming from the rye, and not the hops, and it's certainly not from the alcohol at just 7.5% abv. I'm quite surprised that I've still got a head on this, which is great, and the lacing is pretty good as well. Beyond that, the haziness kills it for me appearance-wise although I understand that's pretty acceptable these days. Back to the flavor, the malt is bready, grainy, spicy and sweetish but nicely balanced by a firm bitterness. It's got a nice soft sweetness upfront and then it finishes dry, spicy, piney, and herbal. In the mouth it's medium to medium-full in body, and gently effervescent and then creamy and smooth. This is a pleasant reminder that I've got to get back to Urban Village.
