At the brew pub in Northern Liberties, it came from a tap, delivered in a clear pint glass. It's color is just a tint more mahogany than black coffee brown. The light tan head is modest and enduring. There's plenty of roasted malt for the nose, softened a bit by a hint of oats. They soften out the taste, too. Isn't that part of the purpose of their addition? There's enough taste until the finish turns wet and almost watery, when the dryness of the hops and roasted malt was expected. That's not a major detriment, just a surprise. The body is about average for the style, which makes it better than many brews out there. As for the roasted and chocolate flavors promised on the menu, nope to the chocolate. The roasted malt aspect is OK, not remarkable. The seven percent ABV is virtually tasteless. The fair glass lacing isn't enough to distract from wishing this had just a little more something to offer.
