Name: Barrel Aged Fully Loaded French Toast Stout
Brewery: Untitled Art
Location: Waunakee, WI
Style: Barrel Aged Imperial Stout
ABV: 13.5%
Canned: 12 Nov 2021

Returning to my cellar, I chose this beer to review: Barrel-Aged Fully Loaded French Toast Stout. I am using a tulip glass and serving the beer at 48 degrees. The pour created a frothy, airy, one-fingered dark tan head with terrible retention. The quick dissipation left no lacing on the glass. The color is jet black with dark brown hues, charting at SRM 36, and opaque. The appearance of the beer is below average.
Nosing the glass, I smell maple, vanilla, caramel, chocolate, bready, dark roasted malts, lightly toasted grains, cinnamon, toffee, oak, bourbon, and a light fruity note. Smelling the glass again, I notice mild coffee, earthy, and alcohol.
The flavors taste like maple-soaked cinnamon French toast dunked in a delicious imperial stout. The French toast is eggy, bready, and heavy-handed with cinnamon. The maple syrup drizzle added to the beer is a bit sweet, with caramel, toffee, vanilla, and molasses notes. Sipping the beer again, I taste oak, bourbon, milk chocolate, dark roasted malts, and earthy sweetness.
The mouthfeel is chewy and thick, finishing smooth. The body is heavy and has low carbonation.
Dessert imperial stouts are hit or miss for my liking. They are often either too sweet and have too many adjuncts or simple with few adjuncts that blend seamlessly with some sweetness. This one bridges those two spectrums. The beer is a touch sweeter than I prefer, but the adjunct works harmoniously. If the sweetness was pulled back a bit, this would be a perfect beer for my liking. Overall, it is a solid offering from Untitled Art and Angry Chair.

Pours a thick black/brown with generous head that dissipates to nothing fairly quickly.

The aroma has cinnamon at the forefront. Vanilla and booze follow. Sweet chocolate hovers in the background.

Taste follows closely. The cinnamon is at centre stage and dominates the mouth. Vanilla, sweet milk chocolate and a little stewed fruit bring up the rear.

The body is quite thick and slightly syrupy. The latter does not detract from the beer.

Overall I enjoyed this. I like the dominant cinnamon characteristics. It is quite sweet though.

This 16 oz. can is my 12th beer from Untitled Art & they’ve run the gamut from crappy to excellent. Hoping the alliance with Angry Chair pushes this to the latter.

Black. The nose brings spoonfuls of Runamok Maple Syrup, alcoholic heat, & hard, sweet malts.

Fully Loaded French Toast – Barrel Aged is rich & beautiful, like an old Elle Macpherson video (look her up, kids). Great barrel presence up front: bourbon, no water, weighing on the stomach like too much bacon (if there was such a thing). Then comes the swarm: hearty maple syrup, warm vanilla, booze (necessary when it’s 3 degrees out), light chocolate, sweet sweet sweet malts and/or some of the previously name co-conspirators. Heavy & filling, like French toast pie, but the ounces, they are appropriate.

Might be the best UA beer I’ve had. Excellent brew.

16 oz. Can
Canned On: 11/12/21

Poured into a chalice a pretty nice dark brown/black color, with some pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice thick/creamy/quick/fizzy one-finger tan head, and also leaves some minimal sticky lacing behind. The nose is very nice, malty, hoppy, with a very nice touch of chocolate/toffee, bourbon/oak, slight cocoa nibs, vanilla, licorice, cinnamon, maple syrup. The taste is very nice, malty, hoppy, with a very nice touch of chocolate/toffee, some cocoa nibs, very nice bourbon/oak notes, with a really nice touch of vanilla, licorice, cinnamon, maple syrup, with a pretty nice sweetness. Full Body, ABV is hidden very nicely, with a slight dry/bitter finish, a very nice sipper. Overall, this is a very tasty brew. Glad to see it around here.

A: Pours an opaque yet still clear thick viscous jet black in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and faint dark chestnut brown + dark amber + dark cola brown + dark ruby red colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall dense foamy dark tan head that quickly reduces to a large patch of mottled very thin film covering a little more than 50% of the surface of the beer and a very thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Strong aromas of roasted + chocolate + dark + caramel + bready malts with moderate to strong amounts of lactose sweetness. Moderate to strong aromas of maple syrup + cocoa nibs + vanilla + cinnamon. Moderate aromas of toasted oak + caramel + vanilla from the barrel aging. Hints of earthy hops.

T: Upfront there are moderate to strong flavors of roasted + chocolate + dark + caramel + bready malts with moderate to strong amounts of lactose sweetness. That is followed by moderate to strong flavors of maple syrup + cocoa nibs + vanilla + cinnamon. Then there are moderate flavors of toasted oak + caramel + vanilla from the barrel aging. Finally there are hints of earthy hops. There is a moderate amount of roasty bitterness which fades away fairly quickly leaving moderate lingering flavors of maple + chocolate + vanilla + cinnamon and sweet roasty malts.

M: Just shy of full bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth with moderate amounts of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: Drink easily especially considering the strength of this beer with well hidden alcohol and well managed sweetness in the full mouthfeel. Very enjoyable, really reminds me of eating some fancy French toast with maple syrup. Really nice flavors and aromas, nice complexity.

Pours a dark brown color with virtually no head. Aroma of cinnamon and maple. Taste is cinnamon first with a strong maple burst and a warming alcohol finish. Very sweet. Good dessert beer.

French Toast from Untitled was one of the big hits last year. In 2021, they released a barrel aged version which used last year's base. All the sweet and savory flavor is still there, just a bit more roasted. The barrel is hiding but that is okay as it is still a fantastic stout that endured the journey. One of my favorite projects by UA.
