My New Oddball Beer Sunday (Week 735) is quite the event! I CAN't believe how far I have gotten in this madness, but I will CANtinue as long as I CAN.
From the CAN: "High gravity premium malt beverage with guarana, artificial fruit punch flavor and FD&C Red #40."; "Flavored Ale"; "Follow no rules!"
Ale?!? Hmm. Well, the proof of the pudding beCAN with the Crack! of the vent. I was unsurprised when it poured forth with a bright cherry-redness like Kool-Ade Fruit Punch. I have drank this sort of thing before, but it always helps to have some water as a sidecar. It bubbled & fizzed & produced a brief finger of foamy, pink head with low retention. Color was a bright cherry-red (SRM = N/A) with NE-quality clarity. Nose smelled really sweet & sugary, more like Kool-Ade than beer. Mouthfeel was thin & watery. The taste was like Hawai'ian Punch mixed with grain alcohol. Not only was it deadly sweet, but it was doing nothing to mask its alcohol content! Phew. It was almost admirable in a way, as though they were saying "Here it is! No apologies!" Phew. This will get you where you're going, no question, but a) is this how you want to travel? & b) what happens when you get there? I did not mind their Peach Tea so much, but this was just too sweet for me to be able to derive any kind of enjoyment. Finish was hot and dry, a real punch … of alcohol! Whee!
