Woolfrey's Milk Stout is as thick, viscous, and jet black as any stout has a legal right to be. The head is mousse-like, the color of coffee and cream. Retention is decent.
The first thing I smell is sweetness, but a sweetness that reminds me more of brown sugar and root beer than milk sugar. Milk sugar does come through quickly, but in a more secondary nature as far as I can tell. The center smells somewhat of coffee that's been left on the counter to get cold. The finish is dry, slightly earthy, and offers only a hint of the roasted grains I would expect from a stout.
Lactose sweetness comes through on the palette more confidently than it did in the stout's aroma. Damp earth and dark roasted grain also come through much more notably in Woolfrey's flavors. The finish is slightly dry and has a decent presence of roasted grain in the finish. Mouthfeel overall is smooth, lush, and well rounded just like any good stout ought to be.
I mean, it's a fine enough milk stout and definitely has the lactose sweetness you'd expect from a beer of this style. But as for flavor and aroma, nothing about this milk stout really jumps out at me. It just lacks that more-ishness that would inspire me to give the beer a higher score.

From the Brewmasters series of beers......
A- I am quite surprised at how aggressive and root beer like the head is on this one!......it is dark tan in color, is about two fingers thick immediately after the pour and turns into literally nothing but soda like carbonation explosions. The lacing is also really non existent, with only an oily/watery layer coating the inside of my glass. Overall this is not an impressive looking beer....onwards!
S- Smells nice! Definitely am getting the lactose infusion, with vanilla cream sweetness, milk chocolate richness, muted toffee/caramel, which is balanced out with dry grainy black and or chocolate malt, mocha coffee and a lingering hopped finish. It is robust, yet soft....
T- The flavors follow the aforementioned aromas fairly close, with the dominant flavor being that of a vanilla creme truffle covered in milky chocolate. There are cocoa and black coffee tones that provide a bittering balance, dry grains/grassy notes give this more of the traditional stout character. I do find that while this is tasty, everything in this department seems slightly watered down...the finish has a mild lingering hop presence.
M/O- Maybe this is the watery part, but it is a little on the thin side of the spectrum in terms of body. The carbonation does settle down substantially, to my liking, and fits the style nicely. The alcoholic content is smooth and isn't really too noticeable, only a pinch right at the end perhaps. The drinkability is decent enough, as I have no issues enjoying more than one in a sitting, or say on tap at the brewery. A good decent brew....not great, but a social milk stout!
