Sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can of this brew poured into a snifter. the beer pours a clear mahogany color with some garnet highlights. A thin beige head foams up about 1 cm and fades to the thinnest of edge layers pretty quickly after the pour. Several streams of carbonation rise to the surface but dont amount to anything. Wish the head stuck around a little longer.
The aroma is rich and malty with lots of toffee and caramel mixing together. I do get some dark fruit red grape and plum notes as well. THe alcohol is well hidden on the nose and I dont get much hop profile either. Definitely a sweet malty nose, but not cloying or candyish at all.
First sip reveals an average body with minimal spacious carbonation. The texture is a little sticky and coats my palate on each mouthful.
Flavor is sweet malt just like the nose. I get caramel and toffee, with a little brown sugar and again red grape and plum fruit notes. I do get a little bit of black peppery booze on the finish, but otherwise this is a very smooth hidden alcohol brew. I dont get a lot of hops, but just a little spicy or grassy note buried in the background.
A very drinkable and flavorful doppel. Well done Counterweight!
