Sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into my snifter. The beer pours jet black coffee color with a fizzy tan head of about 1.5 cm foaming up from the pour. This foam fades pretty quickly to a thin edge layer and nothing on the surface.
The aroma is malty through and through with some dark chocolate and a bit of light maple note. there are some light coffee and roasted notes too, but overall the nose is more mild than I anticipated with the amount of additives to the beer.
the first sip reveals a medium to thick body with smooth texture and very fine tingly carbonation. Beer drinks fairly easy for a bigger booze brew. The flavor is rich and malty and more bold than the nose, also much more complex mixture of the flavors the label on the bottle promises. I get dark chocolate and some roasted notes with coffee grounds up front. This gives way to a bit of vanilla and some maple sweetness, which then gives way quickly to the lingering roast and coffee note that sticks around through out the finish. I never get any hop character and the booze is pretty well hidden too.
This is a nice Imperial stout that showcases some good qualities of mixing additives to a beer. I do wish the maple was more pronounced, but Im still happy to have had a chance to drink this one.
