Drudenhaus is a smoked beer inspired by the traditional Rauchbiers brewed in Bamberg, Germany. We used malt produced in Bamberg that was dried over a beechwood fire to create "smoked malt". This smoked malt imparts big smokey flavors and aromas within a rounded, clean easy drinking lager beer.

Think a toasty Marzen, but with a delicate smoked beachwood character permeating grainy honey breadcrust complexity. Also presents very light herbal notes mixing with a touch of earth.

A: hazy; copper in color; 1 finger finely pored light tan head that receded to a wispy cap; OK lacing;
S: reminds me of a German butcher shop that sells a lot of smoked meats;
T: the smoked malt is dominant from start to finish; mild bitterness at the end that increases to moderate in the aftertaste;
M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;
O: this is not a style I would regularly drink on it's own, but paired with the right foods, this would be awesome;

My knowledge of rauchbiers is pretty limited. I've had maybe 4 or 5 before this beer, at most. I'd say though that this one is fantastic and quite pleasing, unlike some others I've had (looking at you Aecht Schlenkerla Marzen) which tasted like smoked meat and I could only drink half of a bottle. This one is more amber lager with a nice touch of bonfire smoke. The nose is quite peaty and smoky with bready malts. Flavor is slightly sweet, caramel, some lager yeast and cracker malts, some smoke in the back end. Finishes clean. I would love to have some more of these in the fall.
