L: A pour into a Counterweight snifter reveals a ruby brown beer with an off white finger of head. After a few minutes the head has shrunk to a small 2 mm ring around the circumference of the glass which is retained. As the beer recedes in the glass it leaves minimal lacing, i.e. small splotches here and there but not much.
S: Caramel, toffee, maple syrup, and vanilla.
T: On the front end I get a strong hit of caramel malt and toffee. This transitions into maple syrup with just a hint of oak coming through (as the beer warms the oak disappears). On the back end I get vanilla and raisins. The finish has low bitterness and is more sweet than anything. To say this is a malt bomb is an understatement.
F: Medium body with low carbonation. The alcohol burn is almost imperceptible for 9.4% abv.
O: This is my first old ale and I have to say I like it. Reminds me of something in between a barleywine and a porter. I am aging a few of these and am excited to see how they develop.
01/30/22 update
Pretty much the same as the bottle I opened on 12/19/20. One difference I noted is that there are now light notes of chocolate on the back end and finish complementing the vanilla and raisin. This one is aging nicely. I have two left and will have to go a couple of years before the next one is cracked.
3/14/24 update
The nose is now dark fruit dominant presenting big notes of raisins and lighter notes of fig. I also get lots of chocolate mixing with a hint of caramel malt character and maple syrup. Light notes of earthy dark cured tobacco. As the beer opens up in the glass I also begin to get notes of toffee.
The palate follows the nose pretty closely. I get chocolate, raisins, fig, caramel malt, sweet maple syrup, toffee, vanilla, and a subtle impression of dark tobacco. This one has sweetened up quite a bit with not bitterness left on the palate.
Still drinking like a champ, but the carbonation has went down noticeably with a low carbonation. Still not detecting any alcohol on the backend or finish.
