L- Very deep old-gold colour, very slightly hazy, pours with 1Cm white head, holds well.
S- Grains + a slight fruity edge to it.
T- ... follows the Smell, but the immediate hint of fruitiness get's overlaid with quite bold but measured hopping, that in turn gets balanced by pretty deep rich toasty malt flavours.
F- Quite rich for a 5%, I'd suggest serving this one well chilled and seeing how far you might let it warm during drinking. It seems to get richer as it warms, hints of sweetness creeping in, so I might not linger with this one.
O- Interesting beer. I recall that there is an expression in Japan; 'The nail that stands up will be hammered down'. This alludes to societal conformity, but also how an ideal is found through harmony and balance. This beer might be an example. The Taste seamlessly segued from prominent fruit > the same for hops > then malts. None dominated for more than a second, and all self-balanced in the resulting overall taste, clever, very Japanese.
Lovely to try, good luck finding it at a humane price!
Bought from The Japan Centre by Leicester Square in London, which is blend of culture, mini-mart (incl beer, sake, spirits etc), groceries, cooking ingredients and hot+cold food to eat-in/take-away all mostly at reasonable prices (for Japanese goods).
They seem to have some specials this week on Abashiri beers from Hokkaido Island. Full price this 350ml can was £8.25! I bought this 50% off at a still $$$ £4.13.... but that's Japan + the weak £ for you... Discount likely due to BB being in 1 month => 12-Sep-2019.
