The Grandfather is an old German-Style lager. It has a malty backbone with minimal hop aroma and flavor characteristics. It is a crisp and refreshing lager.
Grossvater by Akron brewery Renner Brewing Co.was one of the best selling beers in the Akron area in the dozen years before and after prohibition. The Grandfather is named after this old Akron favorite. The name was changed to avoid the similar sounding but very different "gross water".

A 10-oz pour on tap at the brewery served in a snifter.
Look: Clear golden, with a small white head that dissipated quickly and left no lacing.
Nose: I’m not getting much: faint grain, faint citrus.
Mouthfeel: Thin, pretty appropriate to style, adequate carbonation.
Attack: Appropriate to style, light roast grain, bread, slightly sweet.
Finish: The bitterness that should balance turns a little sour and a bit astringent.
Overall: Crisp, pretty good attack — what I would have expected — but the finish disappoints and rather spoils the taste. This is a good brewery, but this isn’t their best offering.

Tap
Pours clear golden, white lacing retains indefinitely.
Aroma is light, cereal grains and coppery barley.
Flavor is of sweet cereal malts with a crisp adjunct bite. Mild hop bitterness comes through on the aftertaste.
Medium body with stinging carbonation on the tongue.
Clean and intensely flavorable, crisp, balanced, and easy to drink. Solid lager, great for food pairing but also fine to drink on its own. It's just a bit much to be sessionable although I would probably try myself. Definitely worth having if you're here looking for something to down a burger with, and IMO the score here (3.5 at the time of this review) isn't reflective of the quality of the beer.
