Notes: This Northwest take on a New England style IPA is easy drinking and fluffy just as the name suggest. It starts with a big orange juice and apricot character on the nose following through on the palate with notes of mango and pineapple. This lends perfectly to the smoothie-like mouth feel and body. Though full of fruit character it finishes with enough of a bite to remind you that it’s a beer from the west coast. Even with this style seeming to be all the rage right now, we think its all fluff.

Tropical notes to the nose and quite malty on the tongue with VERY little bitterness at the end. So balanced that nothing seems to grab your attention or shine.

Well, it looks a bit strange. Most other reviewers describe it as more or less normally IPA-colored, but this one is sort of pale grayish yellow brown, almost puce. Not very pretty, though the head is nice. Could it have suffered somehow in the can? Only the color seems to have been affected, otherwise it’s a very nice beer. Decent nose, though a bit understated. Perfect taste for the style, juicy and gently tangy. Very nicely fluffy. I had to mark the look down quite a bit, but overall I enjoyed it a lot.

Ripe mango puree, papaya, peach, melon and a hint of lemon. Biscuit malt. Citrus bitterness rounded out by nice level of sweetness. Creamy feel. Very good.

Can dated 01/05 I think:
Pours a thinned orange juice color, perhaps a shade of saturation less. Head is white and fluffy and provides a flat map of the world for lacing.

In a hotel glass, this beer still gives off ample tropical notes and citrus rind. Mango skin, little unripe pineapple, nectarine.

Taste starts off with a restrained juiciness. The mango, papaya, ripe canteloupe, sweet grapefruit zest, and a splash of that pineapple all have a shroud around them. That covering seems to want to be bitter, but isn’t quite. The net effect is this has a “zero IBU” feel to it. The non-bitter balance quells the juiciness but is gentle about it. Speaking of gentle, this is a very soft beer, NEIPA cotton candy (the label probably influenced that analogy).

Balanced, zero-IBU or nearing APA flavor profile. Warmth does allow a hint of pine wood bitterness to sneak in the end. A classic easy sipping version of the new substyle. I could have a couple before needing a cleaner, more bitter offering.

I had this beer on-tap in a pint glass at Collins Pub in Seattle.

Appearance: extremely hazy golden-yellow body with a thin layer of tan foam. Murktastic!

Smell: juicy and fruity with nice melon and citrus aroma. I really like it.

Taste: not quite as fruity as the aroma, but a little more citrusy as well as being a bit dank and herbal. Good stuff.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a decent carbonation and creaminess.

Overall: a tasty and refreshing NE IPA. I like the juiciness of the aroma, and would love it more if some more of that carried into the flavor.

Served On-Tap

A — Pours a bright golden orange hue with surprising translucency and clarity. A nice off-white colored head of foam sits on top and leaves behind some nice consistent lacing.

S — Smell is tropical and juicy with notes of guava and pineapple, peach as well.

T — Peach, pineapple, guava, pine, lemon on top of a nicely sweet malt foundation.

M — Light-Medium body with a refreshing crisp bitterness.

O — Very nice overall, looking forward to more beers from Matchless in the future.
