Saké Rice Lager was bound to happen sooner or later for us. First there was Canada Gold, then Mexico Gold, then our good friend at Chainline Brewing, Head Brewer Aaron Blonden joked; "When's the Japanese lager coming"? A collaboration was born! Our take sees the use of pearled white saké rice and a restrained use of Czech Saaz hops leading to a delicate, floral and dry craft take on one of our favorite lager styles reminiscent of the soft notes found in traditional saké!

16 oz. can from Jeremy. Pale golden with small foamy head. Light bodied, faint grainy aroma. Taste is straight up grainy lager, even lighter due to the rice. Pretty tasty though.

Poured into a Chuckanut pint glass. Pours a medium golden amber with a one finger white head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of lightly grainy malt, grassy hops and a hint of lemon. Flavor is sweet biscuity malt with some light husky grain, mild grassy hops, semi-sweet rice developing into a light malt and hop finish. Medium bodied with a light creaminess. A very nice take on this uncommon style in the states. Although still light and somewhat sweet, the malt is more robust and flavorful than the classic style, while still revealing the light rice influence. Its lager roots are clear. This style is supposed to be light and unassuming, and this honors that but adds some more interesting but light flavors that fit well. This was better than I anticipated and well worth trying. Really would be a great dinner lager.

This pours a clear golden color with plenty of white foam in the Orval chalice. Such a pleasant wheaty aftertaste. Or call it cereal. Well, alright, it's rice. The aroma is faint, a hint of lemon and Cream of Wheat. Crisp and clean tasting plus a kiss of hops.
Let's just say this is the best Rice Lager I've ever had, if it's true to the style. But consider the competition-- industrial solvents from Sapporo, Orion, Asahi. This is highly refreshing and gulpable, but it has just enough flavor to be interesting. From the 16 oz can, the appropriate format, purchased at Elizabeth Station in Bellingham.
