Dark brown body that maintains decently even at the corners. Soft sticky light khaki head that's never voluminous, but is solidly there, and sticks around well. Incredibly sticky lacing.

Nose is classic brown malt aromas tending more towards the roasty and maybe even a bit of char. Some light chocolate, but primarily just loads of dark malts.

Flavour follows the same formula. It's dark roasty malts with a bit of char and a dry almost ashy component. Where is the line between a bold brown and a porter of some sort? Is it shades like porter vs stout? This almost drinks like a dry porter, then. At just 4.6% it's got an incredible array of bold flavour and depth to it though.
Dry finish almost carries hints of like lactose (minus the sweetness) and carbonation steps in does its job and gets out of the way. The dry finish also offers a bit of coffee bitterness, but it's primarily the dry burnt malts that dominate things here.

 

Dark brown color, clear though nearly opaque. Plenty of foam in the tall glass and sprightly on the tongue. Cereal aroma with a scorched note. Dark and grainy taste. Not blackened, but really dark. Maltier than a dry Stout, but quite dry. Barely a hint of sweetness.

There are half a dozen different malts in the mix, and the single hop is Northern Brewer. There is really not much bitterness, so it's in line with a lot of other Brown Ales, just less residual sugar. This is very drinkable, and while I wouldn't call it a revelation it's an interesting quaff for a change. From the 16 oz can purchased in Bellingham.
