Our 2023 Ol’ Lifewine release is a blend of English Style Barleywines, handpicked from our barrel library, that were aged exclusively in fresh Westward Whiskey barrels. These barrels add aromas of smooth whiskey, dried fruit and warm oak. A blend of Maris Otter, Amber & Brown malts and just a touch of smoked malt, along with plenty of patience, create a rich palate of candied fig, toffee & pecan pie. Ol’ Lifewine is a perfect nightcap to share around a warm fire.

2023 vintage
I’ve heard a bit about this beer before, yet somehow the brewery Matchless doesn’t ring a bell at all. This is just a relatively straightforward English Barleywine aged in whiskey barrels it seems. Sounds like a great way to end my night. Let’s get into it
Pours an opaque light brown with a finger of soapy light tan head that quickly fades to a thin ring and leaves minimal lacing
The nose is sweet and boozy, definitely evident of the 15% abv. I’m picking up on aromas of sweet whiskey, molasses, toasted walnut, caramel, port wine, buttery oak, fig, black cherry, and burnt sugar
Surprisingly it’s not quite as sweet in taste, but trust me it’s still a sweeter Barleywine. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting sticky caramel, dry oak, sweet whiskey, maple syrup, burnt sugar, baked apple, vanilla bean, and raisin. The swallow brings notes of fig, dry oak, sweet whiskey, toasted pecan, vanilla bean, baked apple, raisin, sweet caramel, and a touch of cinnamon
A medium full body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a slick beer. Finishes a tad sticky but dries out over time
16 ounces is a bit much for this one, but it’s still pretty damn enjoyable
