The unsurpassed Gulden Draak Classic as a dark triple of 10.5% alcohol received a strong addition after 25 years of ever-growing success, the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple.

The particularly rich and complex flavor palette and full head of foam is also found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. However, the sweet notes of caramel remain reserved for the Gulden Draak Classic.

Gulden Draak Quadruple Family
The new recipe based on 4 times more malt gives the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a deep golden amber color and a slightly fruity aroma. Together with the soft and slightly sweet taste, this creates a beautifully rounded bouquet with notes of dried fruit.

Like the other specialty beers from Brewery Van Steenberge, Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple is a top-fermented beer with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for secondary fermentation, which not only contributes to the incomparable taste but also ensures years of shelf life with flavor evolution.

STYLE Amber barley wine.

VIEW Amber with slight orange glow, very bright. fine white foam head.

AROMA Fruity, slightly sweet full-bodied aromas with a very rounded finish.

FLAVOUR Softly bitter with notes of dried fruit. 4 times more malt than for a lager beer.

INGREDIENTS Water, barley malt, sugar, hops and yeast.

HOLDING 24 months (bottle 33cl) – 36 months (bottle 75cl 1.5l 3l) – 12 months (barrel)

Not much of the banana/cloves taste you get with a lot of Belgian beers .. mostly a pear flavor with a super clean finish for a big beer .

What a fantastic beer! Pours a ruby red color with a pillowy white top that laces all the way down the tulip. Cherries, Belgian Candi, and safflower on the nose. Sweet, no cloying finish. Extremely smooth with no alcohol detected. The Candi is forthright with a cherry-esk finish and maybe some apple. Dangerously drinkable but not a session beer, though the palate thinks it is. What an outstanding brew!

The pour is a gorgeous amber color, the good stuff, transparent and crowned with a 5 cm manilla colored head.
The taste is a myriad of fruits, white grapes, apricots, bananas, apples, and a floral taste that works really well. There is some toffee like sweetness that serves to amplify the flavors.
The feel is nicely viscous, there is so much flavor in this that it needs some heft to carry it all. And at 10.7 ABV, it makes a great sipping beer.
OA, another excellent beer from an excellent brewery.

Copenhagen 22/6 2018. 33 cl chubby little bottle from Den Belgiske Ølbutik, Jyllingevej, Vanløse. The usual robotic, golden Dragon on the label. 9000 seems to be postal code for Gent in Belgium.

Pours clear amber with big off-white head. Settles as lumpy, fat layer of foam crawling up the side of the glass. Massive lacing.

Aroma is slightly dampened by the blanket of foam. Sweet and boozy. Caramel, toffee, hints of marzipan, a touch of dark rum and banana.

Medium strong carbonation providing lively mouth sensation. Thick, creamy texture. Slightly sticky and sugary.

Flavor is intensely sweet. Moderate bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet, long and lingering with a light alcoholic after burn.

A bit more heavy and even sweeter than the original Gulden Draak. But not a bad take on a Quadrupel.

From a bottle into a chalice. Deep orange with a ring of long lasting white foam. Smells fruity, malty, and sweet. The taste is smooth, sweet with a mild bitterness and definite belgian notes. Medium bodied with a little "fuzzy" texture on the tongue. Finishes clean. Very solid.

At my lady Pamela's house; bottled and slightly chilled, 330mL in a pint glass. From their Belgian Ale Tasting boxset at Huron Church Rd. LCBO in nearby Windsor. Best before June 27/27. My 3rd beer from the Evergem, Belgium brewery, and for 2025. With Gracie the cat's tacit approval...

Quite a classic and tasty Quad offering from Van Steenberge. Maybe the original triple (and darker) Gulden Draak is the most popular, but this lighter in color quad is a great companion.

Presentation: Iconic 33 cl brown capped short bottle with a dark printed plastic wrap. Label displays the branding in red and black under golden metal dragon of the Ghent belfry with some general tasting notes and ingredients. Notes best before date of 08/01/27. Shows 10.5% Alc. by Vol. Served in a glass chalice.

A - Dark golden amber pour, rich creamy head, good retention, nice yeasty surface memory and lacing.

S - Sweet nose with plenty of caramel over dark and dried fruit notes. The molasses wrap a robust note of prunes and raisins with a distinct Belgian spicy hint.

T - Rich sweetness held up by the carbonation and a classic bitter touch. Recognizable Belgian spicy yeasty sense, dark fruit, with memories of prunes and raisins and back to the molasses Caramel and the memory of unfermented sugar pivoting on the malty notes.

M - Gentle full body and rich prickly carbonation, some sweet stickiness lingers under a bitter dash with an emerging boozy warmth.

O - Tasty full bodied quad. It is quite a rich drink, and pairs nicely with the expected blue cheeses, creamy pastas, and is a great ale on its own.

Notes: This was a fun revisit. Not sure I gave it enough recognition back in the day. In fact, I was surprised I did not even give it a review years ago. Maybe it does not quite sit with the top group of Belgian Quads and dark ales, but it is near. What it may lack in complexity is compensated with a very well rounded general sense. It’s quite a pleasing and tasty Quad. I’m glad I have it available within relative ease around these parts.
