Properly classified as a smoked beer rather than an IPA. It is a cherry wood smoked IPA and the smokiness is the key attribute. Very nice smokey, but not oversmoked flavor....more along the lines of smoked meats than chimney smoke.
The IPA base may be fine on its own but doesn't stand up to the smoke(even though this is not a smoke bomb) There is a touch of earthy, herbal hops. ESB like in some ways...malt leans that way but tough to define as the smoke definitely leads the parade.
Good beer. I like the way the smoke comes through. Could stand to amp up the IPA qualities and see how they blend.
To be clear. This is not an over smoked beer. I like the way it is used. I just think the IPA portion could be beefed up to blend in better.
