In speaking with the brewer, they mashed the donuts in, as well as adding them to the whirlpool. This is important only in understanding that this beer has zero head retention, because fat kills head. Aside from that, I loved this beer.
The head retention issue aside, the beer is a very deep, opaque brown in color.
Smell is decidedly sweet with some coffee and vanilla undertones.
The taste will vary widely as you let this beer warm up, which you should do. If you dive right in, you're going to get a ton of sweetness. I still liked it at this point, but there wasn't booziness (somehow) to offset the sweetness straight out of the tap. After 30-45 minutes, the flavor changed. The initial hit was vanilla coffee, and after a moment or two it gives way to a coconut glazed donut. The booze always remains subdued, only giving a little warmth, which is always scary with a 12% beer.
I don't recall mouth feel one way or the other, which leads me to believe that it's in the medium range. It didn't stick out as too thin, and I don't recall it being overly chewy either.
A really, really enjoyable beer overall.
